President Fernando Lugo of Paraguay met Friday in Havana with Raúl and Fidel Castro, the Cuban media reported. Their talks included the "relations between both peoples and nations and other topics currently in the international news," the official account said, without providing any details.

Lugo, who is recovering from lymphatic cancer, arrived in Cuba on Wednesday for treatment for tendinitis in both feet. He was examined at the Frank Pais Orthopedic Complex and the Center for Medical-Surgical Research (CIMEQ).

A report in the Paraguayan News Portal said the meeting was "unexpected" and lasted about two hours. A photo indicates it took place at Fidel's home. Among the topics were the status of Paraguayan students studying medicine in Havana and the use in Paraguay of a Cuban-designed literacy program called "Yes, I Can."

"Castro and Lugo spoke about the possibility of engaging in a commercial exchange, which is so far nonexistent even though both countries reestablished relations in 1999," News Portal says.

On Saturday, Lugo will travel to Haiti, where he will visit the Paraguayan soldiers participating in the United Nations stabilization mission, MINUSTAH.
