HOLGUIN, Cuba, Feb 17 (acn) A project underway in Holguin to expand bamboo forests to be used as an environmentally friendly alternative to wood has enabled the planting of 1,730 acres of the grass.

Raul Figueredo, coordinator of the project called Bamboo Biomass, said bamboo is a fast-growing resource providing considerable volumes of raw material in a short time, which makes a good alternative to valuable wood.

Figueredo said the plant will be used to increase the production of handicrafts and build farms for animal husbandry.

With that purpose, three carpenter's workshops have been opened in the province to work the ancient and resistant plant and other 10 small ones will be opened this year.

Figueredo added as a result of the initiative the soil that has been salinized by the mining activity will be recovered and water resources of the province will be benefited as well.

Bamboo is increasingly used worldwide due to the growing lack of wood.It is widely used for making furniture, flooring and decorations.
