HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 12 (acn) Mohammed Gharib Bilal, Vice-president of Tanzania, received Cuban ambassador Ernesto Gomez at the Presidential Palace this week, whom he expressed his country's appreciation for the help given by the Caribbean island.

With very few economic resources, Cuba  has solved many problems for its people and has even provided aid to other nations, in areas as important as education and health, he argued.

Doctor Bilal underlined that Cuba has been helping Tanzania since it achieved independence in 1961, and acknowledged the devotion and professionalism of the Cuban physicians that have worked in his country, the www.cubaminrex.cu Web site reported.

Gomez explained the Tanzanian leader the recent steps taken in the area if bilateral cooperation, particularly in the struggle against malaria and in the training of human resources.

The two parties analyzed bilateral and international issues and coincided with the great challenges the Third World should face, in a moment in which climate change and the increase in food and oil prices are real threats to stability and peace on the planet.

In October, 2010, Cuba's LABIOFAM group of enterprises and the Tanzanian government started several cooperation projects, mainly aimed at fighting malaria, a disease affecting 16 million people in that country annually.

The bilateral bonds date back to the close friendship that existed between Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and late Tanzanian leader Julius Nyerere, founder of the National African Union of the then Tanganyika, and President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
