Sugar and rice will be available for wholesale distribution at Cuba's so-called "parallel markets," Radio Rebelde announced Sunday. The large-scale sale of these products is intended to benefit self-employed food producers and servers.

According to the government's Official Gazette, white sugar will be sold for 8 pesos per pound, brown sugar for 6. Rice is priced at 5 pesos per pound.

One Cuban peso (CUP) is worth 4 cents of a dollar. "Parallel markets" are stores that sell comestibles at prices not subsidized by the ration-card system.

Also on Sunday, the Ministry of Basic Industry announced that salt seasoned with onion, garlic or celery will eventually be made available to the Cuban population. A ministry spokeswoman told Radio Rebelde that "at present only a small amount is available at hard-currency stores, due to the high cost of an ingredient that is purchased on the international market."
