2011.02.11 - 14:02:54 / radiorebelde.Cuba’s Anti-Drug Efforts Yielded Excellent Results in 2010. HAVANA, Cuba.- Cuba’s anti-drug strategy allowed the country to reach excellent results in 2010 in a world in which this scourge continues to spread more and more every day.

According to a communiqué from the General Direction of the Cuban Revolutionary Police published on Friday by Granma newspaper, a total of 3,023 kg of narcotics were seized in 2010 —slightly below the 3,186 kg seized in 2009.

Most of this amount (2,422 kg) was part of drug packs reaching Cuban northern and southern shores, mainly of marijuana (2,324 kg).

The report says that 38 suspicious boats were sighted in 2010 and a go-fast boat with three men from the Bahamas, carrying 541 kg of marijuana from Jamaica, was caught.

In addition, in Cuban airports, 22 narcotics traffickers (20 foreigners) involved in as many smuggling operations were captured and 17 kilograms of drugs —mainly cocaine— from South America, Mexico and Spain, were seized.

Control measures in airports were tightened after several cases of drug trafficking attempts involving Cuban residents abroad who participated in the organization, preparation of financing of these smuggling operations.

In national territory, 41 kilograms of drugs —11 kilos less than in 2009— were seized.

Some of the drug interdiction operations included the elimination of marijuana plantations and the detection of illicit commercialization of psychotropics and controlled medicines, and attempts to introduce small amounts of highly addictive and dangerous drugs such as LSD in the internal market.

These results ratify the effectiveness of operations “Ache III”, against international drug trafficking in Cuban maritime borders, and “Coraza Popular”, against domestic drug trafficking.(ACN)
