Harsher Measures for Cubans who Drive under the Influence of Alcohol. The new Cuban road safety law to be in force soon will have harsher measures for those who drink while driving, one of the main causes of accident in Cuban roads.

According to the Cuban National Statistics Office (ONE by its Spanish acronym) 41 people died while 262 were injured in traffic accidents caused by drivers who had consumed alcohol.

The figure shows why these measures are among the most important in the new 109 Road Safety Code.

The regulations of new law will be in force on March 16 and keeps the prohibition for drivers of freight and transportation vehicles, or when they are professional ones, to consume alcohol, especially in the governmental sector.

Car owners will be allowed to a minimum alcohol rate, which will be established by the Health Ministry, as long as it doesn’t affect their driving capacity.

Though the new law will allow drivers to reduce their penalty scores (36 points being the maximum) by taking a theoretical and practical exam, those penalties resulting from driving under the influence of alcohol will not be reduced in any circumstance.
