2011.02.08 - 20:09:09 /radiorebelde.Havana, Cuba.- The Cuban Botany Society and other institutions are sponsoring the 2nd National Orchid Festival to be held in Old Havana from May 3rd to the 7th.

The properties of the Heritage Society, the Quinta de los Molinos Garden, National Association of Botany Amateurs and the Juan Tomas Roig Environmental Protection and Benito Juarez House will welcome all those interested in the world of orchids and other ornamental plants.

The previous edition of the festival held last December was successful, according to a note issued by the organizing committee, so this upcoming event is expected to become ideal sites for dialog among the cultivators and experienced fans.

The participants will be able to attend workshops and conferences and exchange experiences with botanists, conservationist, artists, photographers and naturalists: lovers of a plant that has over 20 000 species in the world, distinguished for its modified petal and appreciated for its delicacy.

The program of activities includes children´s drawing contests, photography, philatelic expositions, painting and live plant samples of which Cuba has reported over 300 species, including the so called frog or ghost, chocolate or cinnamon, giraffe or spider among others.

Co sponsoring the event are the Historian´s Office of the City of Havana, the National Network of Botanical Gardens, the National Botanic Garden and the Ecologic and Systematic Institute among others.(ACN)
