English.news.cn. 2011-02-09 10:26:44. HAVANA, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) will support the development of telecommunications in Cuba, especially in the broadband connection to computerize social programs throughout the island, ITU Secretary-General Hamadou Toure said here Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference, Toure said the ITU and the local authorities "held talks on cooperation," but avoided confirming whether there was already any agreement between the two sides.

The ITU leader is here attending an international information convention on Feb. 7-11, which has drawn some 2,000 delegates from 35 countries.

Toure said the ITU will support the operativity of the Cuba-Venezuela undersea fiber-optic cable, which will be functional in June to increase by three thousand times the current local speed of data, images and voice transmission.

He also said that the ITU will support the development of domestic infrastructure of telephony and data.

Cuban Deputy Minister of Informatics and Telecommunications Jorge Luis Perdomo said Monday at the opening of the Informatics International Convention and Fair 2011 that the government is committed to building a faster Internet environment for the welfare of its citizens.

Cuba is forced to connect Internet through satellite due to the U.S. embargo, which makes the access slower and expensive, therefore the domestic access is limited to state institutions, universities, schools and some professionals like doctors and journalists. An official survey released in July showed that only 2.9 percent of Cubans had access to Internet during the previous 12 months.
