The Drum Festival celebrates a decade as the empirical percussionists meeting point. The event will be held on March 8-13 in Havana, organized by the Cuban Institute of Music and the Ignacio Piñeiro Music Promotion Center.

Percussionist Giraldo Piloto, President of the Organizing Committee, detailed Cubasi the summoning of the International Percussion Competition Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam and other specifics of the event.

- What are the characteristics of the competition?

The festival is divided in two parts: one is the competitive stage and the other has to do with performances. The competition has an international nature. All people can participate regardless their age. Participants may be empirical or professionals.

"They will compete in five categories: drums, kettledrums, large conga drums, bongos and bata drums. We started to promote the event in art schools because many of those interested in participating come from these centers.

"I want to highlight that new attractions are incorporated this time to the awards and we look forward to have more surprises.

"The jury will be composed of professors specializing in percussion, renowned Cuban musicians and foreign artists invited to the event”.

The figure of Guillermo Barreto is always remembered.

The Festival is dedicated to the great percussionist Guillermo Barreto, who is considered one of the best drummers of all time and can be corroborated by the people who knew of his virtue, as Tata Guines, Los Papines and many others.

"But this is also the space to pay tribute to those who have developed rumba and percussion in Cuba”.

- How do such events contribute to promoting the study and dissemination of percussion?

This event is very important to Cuban percussion, as it is the root of our music. Therefore, we are happy to find in the Ignacio Piñeiro music promotion center a staff in charge of organizing the event.

"One of our greatest achievements has been to incorporate some of the participants in the competition to the system of art education and musical groups”.

"In detail, what can you advance on the Havana’s Drum Festival?

The event will be held on March 8-13. The venue of the competition will be the Rumba Palace, but we have scheduled the grand final for March 11 at the Astral Theater. We anticipate that we will see the percussionists participating in places such as the Occidental Miramar hotel for latin jazz concerts, and non-competitive performances at the Mella Theater, Casa de la Musica Miramar and the Salon Rosado de la Tropical.

"There will be lots of performances and dance presentations. Without doubt, it will be a big party”.
