GRANMA. February 4, 2011. Guantánamo Harbor Refurbished. GUANTÁNAMO.- While visiting the easternmost Cuban province of Guantanamo, Cuban Vice President of the Council of Ministers Antonio Enrique Lussón voiced his satisfaction at the remarkable progress of construction works to refurbish the harbor of Boqueron in that province. An initiative that will enhance seaport services, boosting merchandise trading and helping the province save fuel.

Accompanying the vice president were the First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) in Guantanamo, Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar; head of the local government Luis Fernando Navarro; and Salvador Pardo Cruz, Minister of the Iron and Steel Industry (SIME). Following, Lussón toured the roadstead, undergoing the second phase of restoration.

Construction works on the Boqueron port were stalled for nearly four years due to repairing its dock, and were reassumed July last year following this first phase of refurbishment.

For his part, Lusson spoke about enhancing cargo transport services and speeding up merchandise loading and discharging by enlarging the railway a few dozen meters to reach the port's breakwater. In addition, using railways to transport goods instead of trucks allows saving fuel, contributing to lower financial burdens on the Cuban economy.

Later on, Lusson, who is also a Division General and Hero of the Republic of Cuba, toured the new railway installation in the community of Boqueron, currently undergoing renovation to improve the condition of its facilities and its travelling services.

Other places Lusson visited included the Guaso Hand Tool Manufacturing Company and the Mayor General Carlos Roloff valves and industrial pumps manufacturing company, where he learned details about ongoing works to repair and overhaul public transport vehicles in the province, and about the local production of hand tools mainly used in the agriculture sector such as files and hoes.
