2011.02.01 - 11:06:19 /CAMAGUEY, CUBA.- One of the best preserved hamlets of Cuba’s sugar mills -that of the former “Jaronu”, was declared a National Monument on Monday.

The National Commission of Monuments (CNM) conferred this status to Jaronu for the heritage values of its buildings in the northern municipality of Esmeralda, where on December 26, 1921, the first sugar harvest of the industry that was once the one with the largest milling capacity on the island began.

Made up by the sugar refinery and the hamlet, the area shows notable urban planning and coherence in public spaces, and in terms of architecture it has a high level of perfection and authenticity. Its construction began in an area that was 600 meters long by 300 meters wide.

The buildings are located in today’s Brasil Sugar Enterprise.

Nilson Acosta, executive secretary of the CNM, read the accord declaring the hamlet as a National Monument.  There are another eight places with this category in the province, including the urban historic center of the city of Camagüey, the original area of which is a World Cultural Heritage Site.

The ceremony was held on the eve of the opening of the Cultural Festival organized to mark the 497th anniversary of the founding of Camagüey, one of the first settlements built by the Spaniards in the Americas.

Doctor Eusebio Leal, director of Havana’s City Historian office, will offer a keynote lecture on Tuesday to inaugurate the symposium “Challenges in City Management”, which is part of the activities scheduled for the celebration that will run until February 7.(ACN)
