HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 29 (acn) The Director of the Regional Culture Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Herman van Hoof, said that the recently concluded 12th International Congress on Pedagogy (Pedagogia 2011) confirmed itself as one of the most important events in the world for the development of projects and research on education.

Speaking to ACN, Herman van Hoof added that this kind of meeting facilitates the signing of cooperation agreements and the promotion of education practices.

Almost 4,000 Cuban and foreign delegates participated this year in the event and shared experiences in the training of teaching personnel, literacy campaigns and methodology.

UNESCO has participated in several of these meetings, which has allowed it to establish working priorities with the Cuban education Ministry in areas such as HIV/AIDS prevention, the protection of the natural and cultural heritage and risk management in front of natural disasters.

Currently, the cooperation program between UNESCO and Cuba is implemented through chairs in six Cuban universities and a network of 76 associated schools, which, according to Herman van Hoof, is one of the largest and most developed around the world.
