21 de enero de 2011, 16:29Havana, Jan 21 (Prensa Latina) The needs ofthe Cuban economy will determine access to university studies next academic year starting in Cuba in September, stated the Director of Registration in the Ministry of Higher Education, Rene Sanchez Friday.

"The schedules and programs are currently under development, so I cannot anticipate any other thing because we do not want to be inaccurate," Sanchez said in response to Prensa Latina during a conference with reporters.

Before now, places were offered in correspondence with the number graduating from high school, he recalled, saying that the numbers of technical careers will rise and humanities specialities will decline, just like last year.

As a trend in the country, 50,000 students who graduate from senior high school, and pass all three main exams, will have assured a place, numerically speaking.

The official said that the students who fail at the first call or exam presentation will have a second chance to achieve a minimum of 60 percent of points in the three main subjects to be tested: Mathematics, Spanish and History of Cuba.

"With this in mind we scheduled three calls, the first in May to all applicants known as ordinary, a second in June for all who failed in the first call, and those exceptionally authorized for their exams, with the name of Extraordinary Call," he stated.

In late August there will be a special edition for the students who failed in the extraordinary (for the first time) and for young people on official missions abroad when the two initial calls took place.

Also it allows students in the national pre-selection for the International Science Olympiads to opt for relevant careers without the need of a test, otherwise they would have to follow the process.

Medical science careers will be awarded municipally in correspondence with the pedagogical model for training of these professionals, said Sánchez.sus/as/tac/mgt/ro . PL
