LA GUAIRA, Venezuela (AP) -- A fiber-optic cable that will eventually link Venezuela to Cuba is being rolled out by a specialized ship off the South American country's coast.

The Paris-based company Alcatel-Lucent SA is carrying out the project for the two countries' state telecommunications companies. Cuban officials have said it is expected to cost about $70 million.

Alcatel-Lucent says the cable is scheduled to be functional in July, spanning about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from Venezuela to Siboney in eastern Cuba.

Venezuelan and Cuban officials attended a ceremony Saturday at Camuri beach near the port of La Guaira, where the cable was suspended from buoys behind the ship that will run the optical fiber along the sea floor to Cuba.
