Havana’s International Book Fair to Host its 20th Edition

2011.01.20 - 19:32:38. International Book Fair. Havana, Cuba.- More than 2,000 books by Cuban and international authors will be soon hitting the book shelves at 16 book fair venues across the Cuban capital, when the Cuba 2011 International Book fair opens its doors on February 10.

This 20th edition of the event, which will run until March 6, will be dedicated to the bicentenary of the first independence in Latin America, as well as to the 220th anniversary of the Haitian Revolution and the first declaration of the abolition of slavery.

Likewise, the Fair will serve to pay tribute to intellectuals Fernando Martinez Heredia and Jaime Zaruski, and will have the member countries of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) as special guests.

The organizers of the event, cited by the Cubahora Web site, announced that this year’s professional, academic and literary program includes colloquiums, tributes, lectures, book readings, awards ceremonies and book presentations.

Havana’s International Book Fair is considered one of Cuba’s premier cultural events, as well as one with the highest attendance in the capital. In 2010, more than 2 million people visited the Fair, with book sales nearing the 900,000 copies of various genres.

The presentation of the ALBA Bicentennial Collection, a compendium of the best in Latin America and the Caribbean literature, will be among the highlights of this year’s event.

The literary collection includes works by Ruben Dario, Juan Bosch and Edna Iturralde, as well as others by outstanding Latin American and Caribbean writers.

Some collection titles are Cuentos Macabros (Macabre tales) by Nicaraguan Ruben Dario, published by Arte y Literatura; El Caribe, frontera imperial (The Caribbean, imperialistic frontier) by the late Dominican writer and politician Juan Bosh, printed by Ciencias Sociales; and Simón era su nombre (Simon was his name) by Edna Iturralde, of the Gente Nueva publishing house.(ACN)
