Jan 17, 2011. Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Chellie Pingree is part of a bipartisan group of lawmakers from the House Armed Services Committee touring detention facilities Monday, Jan. 17, at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The group, including Armed Service Committee Chairman Buck McKeon, R-Calif., will inspect detention facilities and talk with military officials about the detainees being held there. “I want to see first the facilities in Guantanamo first hand and talk to the commanders on the ground,” Pingree said.

The detention facility at Guantanamo opened nine years ago last week; 173 prisoners are reportedly being held there.
