Europe, the Caribbean and Alaska will be among the top destinations for cruises this year, according to the Cruise Line Industry Association (CLIA).

The association estimates that up to 16 million people will take cruises in 2011.

That's a projected increase of 6.6% over 2010.

CLIA spokesman Bob Sharak says the cruise industry "has been extremely resilient, particularly during the latest economic downturn".

According to the association, about three-quarters of cruise passengers last year were from the United States and Canada and 26% were international.
