Joe Guerriero, artist, photographer. Joe Guerriero has been visiting Cuba on photo assignments since 1999, when he first traveled to Havana for a project on that city’s Chinatown. He went back over the years, always with a license granted him by the U.S. Treasury Department, as a photojournalist for a number of different projects, including a film on the religion Santeria.

Photos from his collection are on display now in an exhibit entitled Cuba: Streets, Struggle and Spirits, at the Watchung Arts Center.

In addition, Guerriero’s film, “Cuba: Looking Out,” is also being shown. Guerriero describes this film as “a work in progress about the effects of the U.S. embargo on the people of Cuba.” It intersperses interviews and still photography to provide a sense of how individuals in Cuba’s neighborhoods have been affected by the long-standing embargo and how their lives might be different if it were lifted.

He intends to expand the piece over time.

Guerriero lives in Fredon and teaches photography at Sussex County Community College.
