Written by ACN.Thursday, January 2011 09:45. HAVANA, Cuba.- Haitian President Rene Preval said on Wednesday that Cuba's assistance to his country is the most active and effective of all received to face the current cholera epidemic currently affecting Haiti.

Speaking in a meeting with the participation of the Cuban ambassador to Port-au-Prince, Ricardo Garcia Napoles, Preval highlighted the example of Cuba's cooperation and the contribution of more than 1,500 health professionals from the island in the fight against cholera.

"I thank comrade Fidel (Castro) for the attention he has constantly paid to the situation in Haiti and because he remains informed about the effectiveness of the treatment given to those infected and to the groups vulnerable to the disease," said the Haitian leader, according to Cuban television.

Preval greeted the members of the diplomatic corps in Haiti and representatives of international organizations. Later, in a speech broadcast nationwide, he sent condolences to the relatives of the victims of the earthquake that devastated the Haitian capital on January 12, 2010, and of the current cholera epidemic.

He also thanked the international community, particularly Cuba, for their assistance to Haiti in the face of these tragedies.
