Another strategy to aid patients suffering from autism, through the preparation of their relatives, will be developed today, in Special Daycare “Pelusin”, in the city of Holguin.

Starting at 10:30am, the workshop will be attended by relatives and caregivers of four children coming from Mayari, Levisa and Holguin, apart from the specialized medical staff, with the purpose of sharing the experience acquired during the interaction with the patients.

The event is part of a research project developed by the Department of Neuropsychology of the Lucia Iniguez clinical hospital, in the capital city.

It is formed by a multidisciplinary and inter-sector team (Health and Education) that includes psychologists, a psychiatrist, a neurologist, defectologists, speech therapists, a social worker, and a nurse, who provide advisory to caregivers and relatives.

“The intervention strategy,” said Anabel Vazquez Borja, psychologist and member of the team, “starts with the multidisciplinary evaluation, which enables us the reach to a diagnosis. Through the diagnosis, we start a personalized procedure according to the stage of development, potential and the degree of alterations. It comprises orientation and techniques, based on a program that resulted from the Cuba-England cooperation with the Autism Initiative Institute, given to relatives and caregivers.”

Although the workshop centers its debates around autism, it is open for people who are related to children presenting problems with language, social interaction and behavior, such as trisonomie 15, mental retardation, Asperger disorder, Rett syndrome and disorder of attention with hyperactivity.

Autism is considered a deep behavior disorder, characterized by limitations in language, social interaction, cognition and behavior. It provokes that patients are uninterested in starting any conversation with people surrounding them because it is difficult for them to understand; they do not use non-verbal alternatives like pointing, drawing, mimicking indicating what they want.
