Bill Reilly, who co-chaired the BP oil spill task force along with former Florida guv and senator Bob Graham, said today that Cuba and the U.S. need to talk about oil drilling.

"The problems that we confront in energy, in the oil and gas industry, are like so many environmental problems: We cannot solve them alone as a country, even," he said at a press briefing unveiling the report.

"The Gulf of Mexico is shared to a very large degree with Mexico, which has indicated intentions to go into deep water within the next two years. Cuba has also expressed interest in possibly drilling 14 wells, some of them 50 miles off the coast of Florida.

"I have already opened conversation with the Mexicans, as has [Interior] Secretary [Ken] Salazar, about their need to enter in agreements with the United States," he said.

"And one hopes that Cuba can be drawn into this conversation as well so that all of us practice the same level – have the same standards, the same protections as our industries go about mining those resources." LESLEY CLARK.
