2011.01.05 - 13:37:36 / [email protected]. HAVANA, Cuba.- Almost 1.3 million Ecuadorian children will be immunized this year —free of charge— with Cuban pentavalent vaccines and against pneumococcus.

The Ministry of Health of this South American nation announced that the pentavalent vaccine has preventive antigens against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and Influenza type B, according to the website of the Cuban Foreign Ministry (www.cubaminrex.cu).

The children will also receive an immunogen that will protect them from the pneumococcus, which is a leading cause of bacterial pneumonia and otitis media (middle ear infections) and an important contributor to bacterial meningitis.
