Cuban scientific will study deeper on the characteristics and the procedence of the avifauna of Guanahacabibes peninsula in the western province of Pinar del Rio, which is also one of the major corridors for migratory birds in Cuba.

Specialists of that national park along with other experts will begin to monitor, next February, communities of birds typical of that area during the migratory, reproductive and permanent residence stages.

Biologist Alina Perez said to Prensa Latina that they have registered about 200 bird species, 65 percent of them are migratory. One part of their populations migrates and another remains in that location.

The geographical position of the peninsula, in the western edge of the archipelago, favors the arrival of many birds when moving from north to south of the continent and in the opposite direction.

Perez said that the biggest amount of migratory birds come from the U.S.A and land in Guanahacabibes from September.

The first migratory birds of the summer season arrive in March.

Researchers are trying to establish the final destination of the flight after a stay in Cuba. Among the most assiduous there are Candelita, Senorita de monte, el Cardenal, Bijirita trepadora and Bien te veo, Perez said.
