Escrito por Rose Ana Berbeo. sábado, 01 de enero de 2011.10:55United Nations, Jan 1 (Prensa Latina) The first day of 2011 is the beginning of the International Year of the Forests, a UN initiative to raise awareness about conservation and sustainable management and development of the world's woodlands.

The UN resolution for the initiative says forests and their management contribute to sustainable development, the eradication of poverty, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, set by the UN in 2000 to be fulfilled by 2015.

The resolution also calls on governments and regional and international organizations to promote activities related to the Year of the Forests worldwide.

The first action in that sense will be a Forests Forum at the UN in New York, beginning Jan. 24, with the participation of government officials and experts from around the world, who will discuss issues such as forests for people, financial resources for communities that depend on forests, and green economies.

The forests issue is also part of celebrations for other international days, such as those dedicated to Water (March 22), the Earth (April 22), Biodiversity (May 22), the Environment (June 5), and Against Desertification and Drought (June 17).h/ jl/vc/rab.
