The recycling of used oil into fuel for ovens is being tried by several factories in Cuba, according to Juventud Rebelde magazine.

"Used oil, rich in heavy metals such as lead, is one of the industrial wastes with the highest level of power generation. That is why [used] lubricants are given such priority," an employee of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the environment (CITMA) told the magazine in Villa Clara.

Recycled oil is used as fuel in cement factories in the provinces of Villa Clara and Sancti Spiritus and in any factory whose ovens operate at temperatures near 1830 degrees Fahrenheit.

The utilization of used oil is still limited, the magazine says, for reasons that include the bad quality of the oils, which become contaminated in storage. Also, there's a lack of "the culture needed to appreciate the importance of this operation, which is very beneficial for the economy and the environment."

Traditionally, used oil is put through a centrifuge to remove the sludge and then filtered several times to remove any remaining impurities. The resulting liquid is used as fuel in factory ovens.
