Thursday, December 23 2010. Mushtaque Mohammed, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Volleyball Federation (TTVF), has revealed that his organisation may acquire the services of a Cuban coach to assist the national men and women’s beach volleyball teams for the next round of NORCECA qualifying for the London 2012 Olympics.

The national women’s team took the top honours in the Caribbean Zonal tournament on home soil on Sunday, defeating rivals Barbados 2-0 with the pairs of Kelly Ann Billingy/Ayanna Dyette and Elki Phillip/Pauline Woodruffe in deadly form.

Their male counterparts were unable to complete a clean sweep for the host country, losing to Bahamas in a “golden set” in the final to finish as the runner-up. Both teams had already secured places in the next round of Olympic qualifiers by virtue of advancing to their respective finals.

The next phase of competition is scheduled for June next year and Mohammed is keen on getting everything in place to ensure the teams are successful.

“We expect the support of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs,” he said, “they have considered engaging a Cuban volleyball coach to continue preparing the team,” he added.

The local volleyball head revealed that he was extremely satisfied with the performance of the men and women’s teams. He noted that his organisation needs to start their beach volleyball programme as the sport has the ability to develop tremendously.

He explained that the TTVF will be doing an evaluation of the tournament but declared that it was very successful.

“The tournament was one of the better ones we have hosted in terms of organisation,” he said.

Mohammed revealed that the visiting teams were all pleased with the facilities at Saith Park, Chaguanas.

“We have had very encouraging remarks form the team and the international experts that attended all praised the facility,” he said.
