By: AMELIA DUARTE DE LA ROSA.GRANMA. December 16, 2010. In their auditorium, students and professors of the Institute of Higher Arts (ISA) paid on Wednesday a moving and sincere tribute to prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, on the occasion of her 90th birthday.

During the homage, Alicia received a pair of ballet shoes sculpted in chocolate. The artistic gala included the presentations of Victor Díaz music students, who interpreted Nocturne in C minor Op. 48, No. 1, by Frederic Chopin; Lianne Vega, with compositions by Ernesto Lecuona; the quintet of trombones Brass Cuba; and musicians of the House of Improvisers from Güines.

Also performing was actress-to-be Lilian Santiestéban, with the dramatized reading of fragments of the text Fiesta de Alicia Alonso, by Lezama Lima; and ISA rector Rolando González Patricio addressed those present, describing the tribute as "a demonstration of love towards our Alicia Alonso, a myth that has several times gone beyond the horizon of what is possible," and thanked the artist -one of Cuba's most universal figures- for her presence, on behalf of participants.

During the homage, Alicia -Doctor Honoris Causa in Arts- received the piece En la quietud, la danza, an oil painting on canvas by student Léster Álvarez; the photograph Ensayo sobre la parábola del sembrador, by Alfredo Sarabia; and a pair of ballet shoes sculpted in chocolate, by professor Denis Izquierdo, from the Faculty of Fine Arts.
