By: Glenda Pardo. 12 de diciembre de 2010, San Salvador, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) Cuba and El Salvador this week reaffirmed their willingness to continue and deepen relations, which were restored on June 1, 2009 after nearly 50 years.

hat decision was expressed in a statement issued by the foreign ministers of the two nations, Bruno Rodriguez and Hugo Martinez, following an official visit by Rodriguez, which began Dec. 5 and ended last Tuesday.

The visit, the first by a Cuban foreign minister to El Salvador in history, was very favorable for continuing the high-level dialogue between the two governments, the statement said.

The statement expressed the agreement of both countries on issues such as peace and Latin American integration and against the application of coercive economic measures in the region.

The document also states that Martinez called for the implementation of the resolution of the UN General Assembly entitled "Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States Against Cuba."

Rodriguez met with President Mauricio Funes, parliamentary deputies and political and social organizations, and paid tribute to national heroes and victims of repression during the armed conflict (1980-1992).

Officials, lawmakers and Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) leaders thanked Cuba for its collaboration in health, education, sports and other areas.

El Salvador also received on Wednesday a visit by the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Arturo Valenzuela, who concluded in San Salvador a tour that included Honduras and Guatemala.

During the visit by Valenzuela on Wednesday, an agreement was signed providing for the United States to donate five million USD to establish a telecommunications center.
