Cubans applying for self-employment licenses numbered 81,498 as of Nov. 19, Granma reported Saturday. Of these, 73,808 involved individual labor; 6,146, transportation; 1,544, housing rentals.

Licenses were issued to 29,038 and guaranteed to 16,265, the Ministry of Labor said. About 19,480 of the successful applicants were retirees or individuals receiving social security benefits.

In terms of activities, 20 percent of the license recipients said they will work in the manufacture and sale of food; 12 percent, as hired workers; 6 percent will engage in the transportation of goods and passengers, and 1 percent will rent rooms and homes.

The provinces where most individuals have applied for licenses are City of Havana, Villa Clara and Matanzas, in descending order.
