The streets of Cuba filled up with sports enthusiasts on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m., as hundreds of thousands of runners and walkers joined in the Maracuba race of 3,000 or 4,000 meters.

The popular run, held simultaneously all over the country, is the prelude to the Marabana marathon on Sunday, where more than 2,500 runners from 63 countries will compete, according to the event´s director, Carlos Gattorno.

Along with the marathon, runners compete in the 5k, 10k, 15k and 21k categories.

Some 359 runners from abroad were registered as of Friday, and international registration was open until Saturday night, Gattorno said.

More than 2,000 Cubans were registered, with 1,500 of them planning to run in the half marathon (21 kilometers).

Four Cuban course measurers received refresher training, and in five years it should be unnecessary to bring in a foreign measurer to certify Marabana, Gattorno said.

The well-known artist Carlos Reyes (Karl) donated six original works as awards for the winners, a tradition for the last decade. Next year, Marabana will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
