Top News: Former Cuban head of state Fidel Castro gave a talk on Wednesday that implied support for his brother Raúl's drive to reform the country's economy.

Fidel Castro reread sections of a speech given five years earlier, in which he criticized government inefficiency and suggested that subsidies needed to be reduced to "only vital and essential things."

"I admit I was surprised by the relevance of the ideas expressed that, five years later, are more timely than they were then," Castro said.

Castro requested a copy of the original six-hour speech and read sections of it at the meeting. Cuban state media have posted his remarks online. He concluded his talk by saying of the speech "today I once again affirm it."
