By: Nick Patch, The Canadian Press. 12/11/2010 2:56 PM. TORONTO - After a long night celebrating his first Latin Grammy award in Las Vegas, a groggy Alex Cuba was still in a joking mood on Friday.

Asked where he was going to put his trophy — for best new artist — the 36-year-old Cuba was quick to poke fun at the situation.

"I think I will put it in the bathroom so I can see it while I'm taking a shower," responded a laughing Cuba over the line from his Las Vegas hotel room. "No, I'm kidding.

"We have a lovely office where I'm collecting all my awards. And it keeps me inspired to keep working — being surrounded by Alex Cuba hardware."

Indeed, the Cuban-born artist, who settled in Victoria in the '90s, was thrilled but not necessarily shocked by his latest honour.

Though he didn't write a speech, he said he kept positive about his prospects for landing an award from two nominations (he was also up for best male pop vocal album for his self-titled third solo record, released last year).

And he points out that in some ways, he's a "double winner."

Victoria's Nelly Furtado claimed the award for best female vocal album for her Spanish-language LP, "Mi Plan."

More than half of the songs on the album were co-written by Cuba, so it's hardly surprising the two Canadians spent Thursday night partying together.

"We've been celebrating ever since," Cuba said. "I went to bed like 5 in the morning."

"We ended up celebrating together many hours. And I'm tired. I'm talking to you very tired, but very happy."

When the two-time Juno winner rose to accept his award, he promised "you're going to hear lots from me really soon."

Indeed, he says he hopes the Latin Grammy award helps him continue to make inroads into the U.S.

"I think that's the best Grammy I could ever win, you know? I know many artists that they get nominated for the same award for the first time and they don't win it until two-three years later.

"So for me, it means the door is wide open for Alex Cuba now in the U.S."
