Santa Clara, Cuba.- The Abel Santamaria International Airport of the central city of Santa Clara is ready for an increase of 160 flights during the upcoming winter season, meaning that a larger number of travelers will be arriving in this facility this year’s season as compared with the same period in 2009.

The airport’s director, Mario Ricardo Mir, told ACN the air terminal received around 225,000 travelers last year. He noted that during the 2009 winter season, up to 32 flights landed in Santa Clara per week while they expect the number to increase to 40 in 2010.

According to the director, the largest number of incoming passengers is from Canada. The airport also receives flights from Argentina and a connection with Germany will be shortly established, said Ricardo Mir.

The Abel Santamaria airport is the fifth most important Cuban gateway, used mainly by tourists heading to the keys of the northeast of Villa Clara.

Sales expert with the Tourism Ministry office in the province, Jorge Luis Jimenez, said Villa Clara has more than 3,000 rooms ready for the beginning of the winter season, which is the high tourism season for the island.

Jimenez said the number of rooms available is expected to increase with the opening of new hotels. He noted that there has been a growth in the number of visitors to Santa Maria, Ensenachos and Las Brujas keys boasting beautiful beaches and exuberant nature.
