In a meeting with local businesspeople, Obama announced relaxation of U.S. export controls to spur trade between the two countries. He said that U.S. companies were finalizing deals worth around $10 billion.

Sounding as if he were addressing the American public, Obama said today's deals "will lead to more than 50,000 jobs in the United States."

Deals include previously announced transactions involving General Electric for aircraft engines and gas turbines, and Boeing for 737 passenger planes. But details on a key $4.5 billion sale by Boeing of C-17 military transport planes were still being ironed out.

As part of what Washington and New Delhi are calling renewed strategic relations, Obama will remove almost all of the remaining Indian defence and space organizations from a list of entities maintained by the U.S. government to curb proliferation.

He will also relax so called dual-use rules for Indian firms that regulate technology with both civil and defense applications.

The U.S. president kicked off his Asian tour after his Democratic Party lost control of the House of Representatives in congressional elections on Tuesday as voters punished the party for high U.S. unemployment after a campaign marked by criticism of China and outsourcing hubs like India.

On Sunday, the presidential entourage will fly to New Delhi where Obama will visit a local school and will visit the Gandhi Museum. The official talks with Prime Minister Mahmohan Singh are scheduled for Monday. He will also address the Parliament and meet President Pratibha Patil and other Indian authorities.Modificado el ( sábado, 06 de noviembre de 2010)
