Postmedia News and Reuters November 5, 2010. HAVANA, Cuba — Foreign Affairs officials are investigating to see if any Canadians were on board a crashed Cuban plane Thursday night.

The aircraft was reportedly carrying 68 people and there were no initial reports of survivors, according to state-run news media and sources at Havana and Santiago de Cuba airports.

Cuban television said the plane was an ATR-72-212 twin turboprop aircraft that belonged to Cuba’s state-owned Aero Caribbean airline.

The plane was said to have left Santiago de Cuba en route to Havana around 4 p.m. and went down near the town of Guasimal in Sancti Spiritus province after issuing an emergency call.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade is aware of reports of a plane crash in Cuba and is working to determine whether any Canadians are affected by this event,” spokesman Alain Cacchione said Thursday night. “The Canadian mission in Havana is working closely with local authorities and stands ready to provide consular assistance to Canadians as required.”

Canadians with friends or family in Cuba are asked to call the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade at 613-943-1055, or toll free within Canada at 1-800-387-3124.(c) Postmedia News
