Thursday, November 4, 2010, 11:07am EDT. The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) wants to keep Georgia on the minds of Cuba, Turkey and Germany.

GDEcD said Thursday it is planning trips to grow international trade opportunities for Peach State companies. This includes more than 20 international missions and trade shows to promote exports in fiscal 2011.

This week, GDEcD representatives are visiting the Feria Internacional de la Habana (FIHAV), commonly known as the Havana International Fair, in Havana, Cuba. The delegates will explore opportunities in the life sciences and telecommunications industries. Georgia companies attending the fair also represent the agriculture industry. Georgia maintains a relationship with Cuba primarily founded on the export of poultry and other agriculture products to Cuba.

Nov. 17 through 20, GDEcD will lead a delegation of medical companies from the state to Dusseldorf, Germany for MEDICA 2010, a trade show for medical devices, technologies and health-care IT. Georgia is home to more than 300 bioscience companies, including 100 medical device companies, focused primarily on cardiovascular, neurological, orthopedic, eproductive/abdominal and pediatric devices.

GDEcD will host a trade mission to Istanbul, Turkey, Jan. 30 through Feb. 5, 2011. Turkey is a strategic international trade market for Georgia, and is one of the state’s larger export partners with 2009 exports totaling $396 million. Georgia leads all U.S. states in exports to Turkey of paper and paperboard, wood pulp, meat, wood, salt, sulfur, earth and stone, and cork. The state’s exports to Turkey increased from 2008 to 2009 by 29 percent.
