After an intense election day and costly campaigns by both sides, the Republicans won a majority in the House of Representatives with 239 seats, against 183 for the Democrats, according to preliminary figures revealed very early on Wednesday.

There were 13 seats still to be decided, of which four may are likely to be taken by the Republicans and nine by the Democrats.

The House as formerly dominated by the Democrats, with 255 seats against 178.

Meanwhile, the results in the Senate were favorable for the Democrats 51 to 47, with two independents that generally tend to vote for the party of President Barack Obama.

In the case of state governors, previously controlled by Democrats 26 to 24, ten went to the Republican opposition. The Democrats lost Ohio but won California.

The results in Illinois, Oregon, and Maine (with Democratic incumbents), and Connecticut, Florida, Minnesota, and Vermont (with Republican incumbents) had not been yet defined early today. hr/rab/dig/rc/lb
