10/28/2010. Researcher José Alfonso Castro Gómez brings to the shelves his latest title, Ron, cócteles y cantineros de Cuba (Cuban Rum, Cocktails, and Bartenders), full of fascinating details about those specialties on the island.

Castro Gómez, who is the historian of the National Association of Barmen, covers five centuries in his book, examining the Cuban rum industry, bartenders and their associations and clubs, from the early years of Spanish colonialism to the first decade of the 21st century.

Published in Colombia, the 340-page "Ron, cócteles y cantineros de Cuba" features 70 unpublished illustrations, most taken from library archives, including labels, and other beverages, such as beer, Vermouth and cider.

It also highlights famous bars, lounges and other establishments, such as the now-defunct Sloppy Joe's in Havana, and El Floridita (of Hemingway fame).

A chapter on Havana Club Rum covers everything from distillation to promotion of Cuba's  top spirit, known in more than 148 countries.
