English.news.cn.2010-10-25 09:39:02. HAVANA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Cuba has not reported any case of hepatitis B for the last nine years, Dr. Luis Herrera, director of the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, said here on Sunday.

Herrera said achievement is possible due to the vaccination against Hepatitis B, produced in the center run by him.He said that Cuba has exported over 120 million doses of the vaccine to several countries.

Among other important products created at the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, he mentioned the development of other vaccines and the monoclonal antibodies used for different types of cancer, human papillomavirus and other tumors, which increase the life expectancy and the quality of life of the patients.

He also highlighted the discovery and production of the Heberprot-P, which is considered the only drug in the world, able to heal the Diabetic foot ulcers.

Herrera added that over 18,000 patients have received so far in Cuba and abroad the benefits of the Heberprot-P, avoiding the amputation of limbs.

The Heberprot-P was the protagonist of the International Biotechnology Congress concluded here on Friday, and of which, Dr. Herrera was the chairman of the organizing committee.

Exporting of biotechnological medicines is one of the main Cuban income sources nowadays, only preceded by tourism and professional services to other nations.
