Cuba, together with the Dominican Republic, is leading the Caribbean in the Clean Development Mechanisms, assured Dominican Omar Ramirez, Secretary of State for the National Council for Climate Change here Friday.

In statements to Prensa Latina, the Dominican expert pointed out that Cuba has two registered projects, and another one in validation under this mechanism derived from the Protocol of Kyoto for the reduction of greenhouse gases.

Cuba is part of the group of developing nations working to reach a sustainable future, said Ramirez, a participant in the 5th Latin American Forum of Carbon, in session in Santo Domingo for three days.

He said that authorities from 55 countries of the five continents are meeting to overcome obstacles to the progress and improvement of the mechanism and to attract the formulation of projects for the production of renewable energy.

The small Caribbean islands were present for the first time, with a representation from each of them, and Haiti was also present.

We will keep on working for countries like the US, which is not a member of the mechanism, to take the responsibility they have,  Ramirez concluded.
