The city of Havana and the provinces of La Habana and Matanzas, and coastal municipalities in Pinar del Rio, have vigorously began recovery efforts in the wake of the passage of tropical storm Paula.

According to a note from the General Staff of the Civil Defense, there were no fatalities and crews from the utility sector are working hard to re-establish basic services to the population.

The eastern provinces of Camaguey, Las Tunas, Holguin and Granma must continue watching closely the evolution of the meteorological situation and its influence on those eastern territories.

The note urges the population to comply with measures taken by local authorities to prevent accidents and other situations that may put at risk people's physical integrity.

According to the report, tropical storm Paula hit Cuban territory at Puerto Esperanza, in Pinar del Rio, in the afternoon yesterday, and then brushed through Havana, La Habana province and Matanzas, becoming a tropical depression in the early hours of Friday.

Power services in Havana and in the neighboring provinces of La Habana and Pinar del Rio have been severely damaged, with Viñales, la Palma, Bahía Honda, Los Palacios, Consolación del Sur, San Cristóbal and Minas de Mata Hambre, in Pinar del Río; and Mariel, Guanajay, Artemisa y Batabanó in La Habana province, being the worst-hit municipalities.

At least 50 percent of electrical circuits were interrupted in Havana province, where emergency generators are being used to supply the very needed service.
