Former Cuban female volleyball star Mireya Luis praised the silver medal won by her male countrymen in the recently concluded World Championship of the discipline in statements given Tuesday.

"For me it is a heroic performance and I feel very happy and satisfied, because practically they have not had any previous competition and they faced players with more than 100 matches of high level in this season," she pointed out.

Luis added that the youth of the male team, the most inexpert in the event, is another element to eulogize, because they collided with men hardened in all the aspects of the game and they knew how to win.

"The silver medal has a double merit, because it is very difficult to compete under those conditions, with the psychological disadvantage that also represents not having all the resources to train appropriately," she said.

In this sense, she mentioned several of the negative effects of the US blockade of the US toward Cuba, among which there is the impossibility of having a taraflex (synthetic volleyball court) for training.

She pointed out that the Cuban male volleyball team members knew how to be inspired by the example of the Cuban athletes of past times who also overcame difficulties of all types to triumph at the maximum levels.
