The best eight teams in the Baseball World Cup Qualifying Tournament began their race for medals on Friday, with seven winners to continue on to the 2011 Pan-American Games and six to the World Cup.

Cuba, the United States, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Canada, Panama, and Nicaragua will play four games beginning today to classify for those slots.

An analysis of the first round shows the Cuban and U.S. teams as favorites for the final, if the schedule prevents them from playing in the semi-finals, although they will play on Monday to end the second phase.

The U.S. team had a better offense, averaging .365 with six homeruns and 52 runs, compared to the Cuban team's .320, with four homers and 41 runs.

However, the Cuban pitchers barely allowed 1.40 earned runs per game, compared to 2.09 for the U.S. team.
