October 6, 2010 at 3:59 pm | South Journal, Havana, Cuba, a hot country where wearing a suit and tie is really uncomfortable most of the time, has established the Guayabera, or Bera Shirt either for men or women as the official garment for officials to attend diplomatic or state ceremonies.

The resolution establishing the bera shirt as the official garment was published and signed by foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez. The document explains that the decision was taken because this garment "is one of the most authentic and genuine expressions of Cuban identity and because it combines elegance and comfort in the tropical Cuban climate.

The men's Bera will have four pockets and four vertical rows of pleats on its front and on its back, it will have long leaves and its color will be white. For women their Bera will be of any colors and can be as long as a dress.

The Guayabera shirt, which has spread through Latin America, has been honored with its own museum in the central Cuban city of Sacti Spiritus, which treasures shirts donated by Fidel Castro, President Raul Castro, Cardinal Jaime Ortega, ballerina Alicia Alonso, Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, among other personalities.
