13:30, October 06, 2010. Cuba and Salvador on Tuesday signed three cooperation agreements in the fields of health, education and culture.

The agreements were signed by a visiting Salvadoran delegation led by President Mauricio Funes and Cuban officials at the National Hotel in Havana.

Eight other cooperation agreements would also be signed in two months by another Salvadoran delegation, it was announced after the signing ceremony.

President Funes started a three-day visit to Cuba on Monday, the first by a Salvadoran president since the two countries suspended diplomatic relations 50 years ago.

Funes said he wanted to repair a "historic error" that his predecessors had made when they severed ties with Cuba along with other Latin America countries in 1961.

On Monday, the Salvadoran president met his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro, and on Tuesday he visited the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) located at the outskirts of Havana, where 508 young Salvadorans graduated as doctors.

Funes is also expected to meet former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, but their meeting has not been confirmed yet.
