HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 2 (acn) In the presence of Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa, foreign ministers from member countries of the South American nations group, UNASUR, reiterated this Friday in Quito their countries’ support of Correa and slammed the recent coup attempt perpetrated in that country.

Meeting in the Yellow Hall of the Carondelet Palace, Correa gave details of the coup attempt and the murder alternatives
after the plan to bring the country to chaos failed.

Correa said he was deeply sorry for the loss of four lives and dozens of injured as a result of the attitude of the police insubordinates and a few infiltrated armed civilians who – he said- responded to a political plan devised by the Patriotic Society Party (Partido Sociedad Patriotica), PL reported.

The Ecuadorian president highlighted that several murder attempts against him also failed on Thursday thanks to the brave attitude of his escort, the Group of Special Operations of the Police and the Army, who placed their lives at risk to protect him from several murder attempts.

Venezuela’s foreign minister Nicolas Maduro emphasized that Thursday’s events are part of a conspiracy against progressive movements in the region and that it should be analyzed by all South American and Latin American countries.

The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam and Venezuela who reaffirmed their support of the Ecuadorian president in person.

Before meeting at the Carondelet Palace, the visiting foreign ministers met with Ecuadorian counterpart Ricardo Patiño who stressed that coups d’état can’t be longer allowed.

He announced that Thursday night, in less than three hours, the Summit of Heads of State held in Argentina passed a document stating the firm determination to avoid attempted coups.

Coup d’états in South America will be immediately punished with political and economic sanctions that range from the closing of its borders to the suspension of trade with the country where the coup takes place and it will be expelled from the regional group.

Previously, Nicolas Maduro had announced that UNASUR was working on a democratic clause that will include a series of sanctions against those who promote destabilization of the democratic order of a country in the region, according to Notimex.

President Correa declared three days of national mourning for the victims of the coup attempt while the country returns to normal and investigations to identify the responsible for the action and submit them to trial were opened.
