HEBERPROT-P, a Cuban medicine for patients with advanced diabetic foot ulcers and a high risk of amputation, has revolutionized the treatment of this condition.

Manuel Raices, a member of the research team for HEBERPROT-P, told Prensa Latina that the drug was registered in 2006 and since then it has benefited 16,000 patients from several nations.

The compound, the only one of its kind, has many advantages, as it stimulates the accelerated granulation and re-epithelialization of diabetic foot ulcers, reduces healing time, and thus reduces the risk of amputation, the expert explained.

Patients enrolled in the program have been seen a reduction in minor amputation rate of five percent, said the specialist.

HEBERPROT-P was developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) and after a long process of research and clinical trials to validate its results, is now in all healthcare units in Cuba, Root said.

It has also been patented in the United States, European Union, Australia, China, South Korea, Cuba, Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore, Indonesia, South Africa, Mexico, Malaysia and Ukraine and registered in other countries.
