HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 25 (acn) The international community urged the United States on Friday to put an end to the almost 50-year-old economic blockade of Cuba during the 65th ordinary period of sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Granma newspaper reports that the demand was made by the representatives of Bolivia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Laos.

Bolivian President Evo Morales demanded Washington to end its hostile unilateral policy that violates the human rights of millions of people.

“I have respectfully asked President Obama to lift the economic blockade of Cuba and of Gaza, Palestine. It is in his hands to end this violation of human rights,” Morales noted.

“We believe the economic blockade is unjust and unjustifiable. It must be lifted,” said Namibia’s Hifikepunye Pohamba, who also supported the decision of last July’s Summit of the African Union to urge the White House to end the blockade against the Caribbean island.

Then, Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe said: “We join the Non Aligned Movement and other well-intentioned countries that have demanded the immediate elimination of this blockade.”

Haiti’s Rene Preval pointed out that the blockade has to end “because it goes against the values that promote freedom of trade.”

Choummaly Sayasone, from Laos, said this unilateral policy “is a clear violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law. That’s why, in the interest of the Cuban and American peoples, it is time to put an end to it.”
