MIAMI HERALD. September 23, 2010. A "fact sheet" issued Thursday by the White House to supplement President Obama's speech to the United Nations General Assembly stresses how "the promotion of human rights and democracy is central to [Obama's] vision of the world we are trying to build."

The document, titled "Advancing Democracy and Human Rights," says the U.S. has "used the U.N. Human Rights Council to speak out on serious human rights abuses in Iran, North Korea, Burma, Sudan, China, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Syria, Russia, Sri Lanka and elsewhere." The fact sheet does not mention Cuba by name.

In a section titled "Pursuing Democracy and Human Rights in Our Bilateral Engagement," the document lists specific actions taken by the U.S. to promote democracy in China, Colombia, Egypt, Guinea, Honduras, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Somalia.

Again, Cuba is not mentioned by name. The omission might not be significant but it is noteworthy at a time when Cuba is releasing political prisoners and allowing the wife of detained American Alan Gross to visit him.
