International efforts to preserve the ozone layer are beginning to succeed because the Earth's shield has remained stable in the last few years.

That was asserted in a report from the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme released on Thursday to mark the UNO's International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone.

The report, "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion: 2010", is the first update in four years and was written by 300 scientists.

In presenting the report, Len Barrie, head of the World Meteorological Organization research team, said compliance with the Montreal Protocol had prevented greater depletion of the ozone layer.

Achim Steiner, UNEP executive director, said measures adopted under the protocol were effective and had generated multiple benefits, particularly for meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals.

Those initiatives are also contributing to fighting climate change and to protecting public health. If the Montreal Protocol had not been created, the level of ozone-depleting substances in the atmosphere would have been 10 times higher by the year 2050.

The Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substances is an international treaty signed in 1987 and implemented on January 1, 1989.

If all countries meet the objectives proposed in the protocol, the ozone layer may recover by 2050.
